How to create a video using Filmora

In this video tutorial, I'll show you how to create a professional video with Filmora, including how to import footage into a project, do some basic editing and trimming, and export your final video clip from Filmora in a quick way.

Start a new project in Filmora

  • Launch Filmora, and simply click on the New Project icon to create a project with the default settings.

  • An editing window will appear on the screen, where we can start making our video.

File import stage

To import media files into the project

  • Click the Import media files here icon and navigate to the folder where the video and audio clips you want to use are located.
  • Select the media files you want to import and click the Open button. You can access all the files you add to a project from the Media tab.

Preview

  • Preview videos.
  • Double click a video in the media tab and it will start playing automatically.
  • Below the preview window, you'll see a progress bar that shows you how much of the video has already been played, within Filmora.

  • In the event that you want to add only part of a video clip to the timeline, you can use the (Mark In) and (Mark Out) icons, which resemble curly brackets, to set entry and exit points.

Add items to the timeline

  • Click the exact spot in the progress bar where you want the video to start, then proceed to set the In point by pressing the Mark In icon.
  • You should then jump to the position where you want the video to end and set the exit point.
  • Press the play button to make sure you've selected the part of the video you want, and in case you want to add the file to the timeline.

  • Repeat this process for all videos that contain clips that you don't want to include in the timeline.
  • Drag and drop files onto the timeline
  • You can add as many video clips to the track as you like, or you can put them on a few different tracks.
    An important note: it is necessary to place the video clips next to each other, in order to avoid any empty space between them.

Edit and organize your media on the timeline

  • When you have placed all your video clips and arranged them on the timeline, you can also create an audio clip.
  • We can add an audio file to the timeline the same way we add a video file, the only difference is that the audio files have to be added, to the audio track just below the video track.
  • The note icon next to a track tells you which tracks are audio tracks.
  • If the audio file you added is longer than the video clip, you can adjust its duration by dragging one end of the file to the right.

Export the project in Filmora

The last step in the video editing process, is to export the video you created.

  • Click the Export button when you are ready and wait for the export window to appear on the screen.
  • Use the MP4 file format as it works with both macOS and Windows, so you don't have to worry about video compatibility with different media players.
  • Click the Settings button to adjust the video encoder, resolution, frame rate, bit rate, or change the output audio settings if necessary.
  • The rendering process will start once you click on the Export button.

  • The video file you created will be located in the folder you specified as the destination folder after playback is complete, within Filmora.
